Freedom of Speech

The first amendment grants us the right to freedom of speech, but personally I believe this has been manipulated and used for granted. Obviously the American government wants us to have as many individual rights as possible, but this does not mean there should not be limitations. I don't so much believe that we should in fact limit what people can say, because this gives them the incentive to "fight the power." They would argue simply because they were told not to. However, I do think that speech should be monitored and if anyone feels their safety or rights are being threatened, then the government or authoritative figure should intervene. This way we can preserve their freedom while protecting other people's safety.

I think if speech were to be monitored as you suggested, people would feel as though it were a limitation. Yet, I do agree with you in the way that there should be something set in place for those who feel that their safety or rights are being threatened. Things such as cyber bullying could be an example of where I think something more should be done. How do you feel the government could intervene to introduce a safer society to, as you said, preserve freedom?

Well put, Kira. I agree with you that safety comes first, but we should also have the right to say what we want. We should try out best to avoid bringing higher authorities into the mix because people could get upset, but if necessary, that would be a good start.
