The most significant event in 2011 was seal team 6 attacking and killing Osama Bin Laden. He had been terrifing americans, and kept bring them grief. He was the head of the most feared terrorist group. He headed the 9/11 attacks and killed many americans. The fact that he's dead has brought some peace of mind to the families of the men and women who died during 9/11. That is why it is the most significant event of 2011.
